Cobol Consultant

We are looking for a COBOL Expert to support a modernisation programme for legacy industrial applications. The engagement starts with a 6–8 week pilot, followed by further implementation phases estimated at 12–18 months, depending on the pilot results.

The business processes will be migrated to a new application developed in .NET with PostgreSQL. Your role is to understand the existing COBOL code (data structures, business logic and dependencies) and to help document and transfer this knowledge to the development team. This role does not involve writing COBOL code.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyse and reverse-engineer existing COBOL applications to understand their data structures, business logic and dependencies.

• Document the business rules, data models and integration points in a clear and structured way.

• Support the knowledge transfer to the .NET development team, helping translate legacy logic into requirements for the new application.

• Work closely with the development team and the client’s Product Owner.

• Validate the results of AI-assisted code analysis, confirming their accuracy and completeness.

• Help identify risks, gaps and edge cases in the migration of business processes.

Requirements

• Solid experience with COBOL, with a strong focus on code analysis and reverse engineering.

• Ability to understand complex legacy data structures, business logic and dependencies.

• Experience documenting legacy systems and transferring knowledge to development teams.

• Good communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and business stakeholders.

• Good English, written and spoken.

Nice to Have

• Combined experience in COBOL and .NET.

• Familiarity with HP NonStop / Tandem and Enscribe files.

• Experience with legacy modernisation or migration projects.

• Experience with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL.
